The Optical Engineering programme in the Faculty of Engineering allows students to be specialised in optical technology which include subjects like laser technology, optical waveguides, optoelectronics devices, optical communications systems, optical metrology and testing, fabrication and packaging technology and optical signal processing. This programme is designed in response to the increasing market demand and for optical manufacturing activity, which will continue to increase and may become an important industry supported by Malaysian expertise and infrastructure in the electronics packaging industry. These subjects: basic electronics, digital logic design, circuit and signal analysis, computer programming, power systems and machine, microprocessor systems and interfacing, electromagnetic theory, control theory, multimedia technology, computer networking and data communications are taken after the students complete other basic subjects in electronics engineering. Other subjects include mathematics, economics, accounting and Malaysian law. The optical engineering programme is designed to provide students with opportunities to undergo practical training in the industry and to obtain research experience through graduation projects.
