The Global Innovation Tournament
The 2009 Global Innovation Tournament (GIT) is a fast-paced competition that will challenge student teams to solve a common, world problem in about eight days, creating as much value as possible. Teams must then convey their results in a short video posted to YouTube. The mystery problem will be revealed on November 4 (GMT-8) and submissions will be due November 13 (GMT-8).In the past, the assignments involved common, everyday objects. This year it's a global problem. What will it be?
GIT Malaysian Challenge
Global Innovation Tournament is organized at 2 levels :
The GIT Malaysian Challenge (national level)
The Global Level (global level)
The GIT Malaysian Challenge, a prelude to the Global Level, is organized by Alpha Catalyst Consulting (an Asian based innovation consulting company) together with Warisan Global Sdn. Bhd. (The Malaysian Country Host for Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009). The official sponsor of the Malaysian GIT is Bank Rakyat.
5 universities have been selected by our official sponsor as the hosts that will serve as a venue for the briefing session held between 5th- 15th October 2009. The universities are:
International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)
Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT)
Tun Abdul Razak University (UTAR) - to be confirmed
MARA University of Technology, Shah Alam (UiTM) - to be confirmed
University of Malaysia (UM) - to be confirmed
You can choose to attend the briefing session at any of the 5 universities above, preferably the university nearby your institute.
During these sessions, we will be sharing with the students a framework on how to approach innovation and rapid prototyping; and the mindset needed to spur creative thinking. Students from other universities will also be able to participate in these events.
The Malaysian challenge will be released by Alpha Catalyst Consulting and will commence from the 19th till 26th October. The Malaysian challenge would include two questions one relating to the banking industry and another on nation building/1 Malaysia. Participants may choose either of these to solve. Winners will be notified before the 4th of November 2009.

Subject: Announcement: i-space distant-lectures series on "Pattern Recognition and Inverse Problems"
Dear all,
I am please to announce that a new series of i-space distant-lectures via the WINDS satellite system will begin next week. For your information, the topic of this series is "Pattern Recognition and Inverse Problems", by Associate Prof. Keisu Kameyama (http://emerald.cs.tsukuba.ac.jp/kameyama/) from University of Tsukuba, JAPAN.
Abstract:
Various problems in signal and media processing can be formalized as attempts to solve inverse problems. Inverse problem is a general class of mathematical problems encountered when dealing with a system that converts the original information to an output.
In the inverse problem of the first kind, you have some knowledge about the system, and have access to outputs. Estimating the source information is the goal of this problem, which can be made possible by carefully choosing the inverse mapping, which is often not straightforward. Among this class of problems are, noise reduction from a signal, reconstruction of degraded images and so on. As a means to tackle problems of this kind, starting from the knowledge of basic linear algebra, the technique of regularization will be discussed.
In the second class of inverse problems, you have access to a collection of the system's inputs and the corresponding outputs. The goal here is to estimate the system itself. Various problems in signal and media processing fall in this class.
In this lecture, we will focus on building pattern recognition systems by learning, where the appropriate system is built via learning. Among the formalisms of pattern recognition, subspace methods, neural networks and support vector machines (SVM) will be discussed. Each lecture is planned to be self-contained.
Venue: NMES Lab, 1st floor, Wing B, FOE Building.
Time: From 14.15 p.m. - 4.30 p.m.
Date: 3 Sept, 17 Sept, 1 Oct, 8 Oct, 22 Oct, 29 Oct, 5 Nov, 12 Nov and 19 Nov 2009.
All are welcome.
Best regards,
Su Wei

We are pleased to announce that we are offering a position for a Research Officer (RO) for the project below. The duties of the RO would be to undertake research and development work for the project, along with some administrative tasks. In addition, the successful candidate would be expected to undertake a Masters degree by research (M.Eng.Sc.) in the same field at Multimedia University (MMU) during the duration of the project.
The project details are as follows:
Project title: Multi-touch Image Analysis and Object Recognition
Objectives: The objectives of this research project are to:
To enhance multi-touch images acquired from natural user interfaces such as a multi-touch tabletop computer
To analyze the multi-touch data to distinguish individual touches (e.g. fingers) of different users and objects
To correctly recognize a range of objects on a multi-touch surface
To create supporting technology for custom-designed cost-effective multi-touch tables and other natural user interface applications
Project Overview:
This project aims to develop an accurate, fast and efficient detection module for a camera-based multi-touch tabletop system. The images produced by touches are usually of very low quality, sometimes equivalent to smudges. The aim of this work would be to enhance such images through noise filtering and image enhancement techniques. Segmentation and shape detection would then be applied. The images would then need to be labeled, and finally, object recognition would be required to be able to distinguish the objects in the captured images. In addition, as the tabletop is interactive in real-time, sequence processing may be required to provide underlying image and action understanding. Artificial intelligence tools such a neural networks would be used. The outcome of this project would provide a versatile detection module for a camera-based natural user interface requiring single- and multi-touch capabilities, supporting multiple users.
Qualifications:
The candidate should possess a good bachelors degree in Engineering or Information Technology (or equivalent), with confidence in undertaking software programming. Knowledge in image processing would be an added advantage.
Submission:
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, a resume/CV and copies of their degree transcripts in softcopy by email to:
The deadline for the application is 15 June 2009. Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview at the Faculty of Engineering, Multimedia University, 63100 Cyberjaya.
